Halloween Havoc: How To Prevent Spooky Damage from Costume Styles

We've all seen clients for emergency appointments when the costume lasts beyond Halloween...

So what can we do to prevent waking up after a Halloween party to the dreaded realization that spray-in color isn't as "washable" as the bottle said? Here are our tips to keep your costume from becoming permanent...

Be Cautious With Color

Hair sprays are a popular costume go-to for transforming your everyday locks into something completely new and different, but exercise caution as they can leave lasting stains that haunt you for months ahead. If you have lighter hair or color treated hair, you're more likely to notice staining occur from low-quality sprays and chalks. If you're trying for an all-over color you're safer reaching for a wig to protect yourself from heartache and expensive color correction appointments.

If you have your heart set on an all-over color, think about finding a hair wax instead of a spray and look for a reputable brand in the hair care industry to make sure you aren't going to be living with electric blue hair until Thanksgiving.

Prep to Protect

Don't wait until the 31st to set the stage for your costume. If you'll be manipulating your hair in any way (or if you just want it to look great) prep your hair routine a few days prior with extra moisture, heat protection, and by taking the time to create a protective style under any wigs.

Don't Wig Out (Without Proper Planning)

Wigs are so easy, you can just toss them on and transform your look! Mostly true, but the best way to prevent your natural hair from becoming damaged in the process of wearing a funky wig is to braid your hair into protective plaits ahead of wearing it. Not only does this hide your hair well under the wig and distribute any bulkiness evenly, but it keeps your hair protected from friction and knots while you party the night away.

Undo with Care

While we're all guilty of coming home after a long night of trick-or-treating and flinging bobby-pins everywhere on our way to crash face down into bed (just us?) resist that urge and take a few minutes to undo your hair before sleeping on it. This means taking out any pins, clips, or braids and brushing out your hair properly or if it's filled with wax, gel, or other goos-- doing a double cleanse and deep condition. Say thank you for completing your look all night with a little TLC before you zonk out.
